 "It's Athleticism, Stupid!"

Some of you guys are too young to remember a famous line by James Carville, during then Gov. Bill Clinton’s campaign run for the Presidency of the United States, in 1996.

Borrowing from that phrase, I can insert the #1 problem coaches are telling me they have building successful teams these days.

Athleticism

The definition is: physical prowess consisting variously of coordination, dexterity, vigor, stamina, etc.

With P.E. being cut from so many school curriculums, the dramatic increase in youth watching television and playing video games, and the number of kids who do participate in sports “specializing” in one sport these days, true athleticism is hard to find.

When we do encounter real athlete, they are allowed to skate by high school, may or may not have to attend college, or play for a year, then go directly to the pro’s so teams can then pay them exorbitant amounts of money on them to “save” the franchise, and take them to the championship.

I have always said, the best teams are the ones with the best athletes!

Yes they can run faster and jump higher than the rest in some cases, but not always.

More importantly though, they can anticipate the upcoming play. If they get knocked down, they get up quicker. They can jump high true. But when they land, they can immediately position themselves correctly to make the play.

"The athletes have rehearsed and practiced these movements to the point that it has become like music in their heads."

Which brings me to the second thing which I think impairs coaches a little.

Rhythm

All of sports is a rhythm.  Look at a quarterback dropping back to pass. There are a definite number of steps he takes. The timing between he and the receiver must be perfect.  They repeat this in practice  hundreds of times. It’s a Rhythm.

The basketball player shooting a jump shot from the same spot, or the volleyball player practicing their set. Rhythm.

Now, if you’re still reading this right now, you probably have encountered these issues with your team or athletes.

Listen up! Despite what you might think, these skills can be taught!

And guess what? It’s EASY and requires very little equipment!
